Mesotherapy VS. Liposuction

What is Mesotherapy?
Mesotherapy is the practice of using microinjections of medicine, Phosphatidylcholine, amino acid, anesthetics, supplement and/or vitamins into the mesoderm or middle layer of skin to eliminate fat or correct aged skin problems. It may improve blood flow to the treated area, dissolve excess fat deposits, remove fibrotic, hardened connective tissue and improve lymphatic drainage.
Mesotherapy has been used for body sculpting, cellulite reduction, skin rejuvenation, local fat around abdomen, fat pads under the eyelids, acne and etc. Usually a single treatment may require several dozen injections. The course of treatment varies with each individual, but most require 5 to 15 treatments to achieve desired results. It is a non-surgical procedure without the risk of general anesthesia, open wounds, long recovery periods and pain. Patients can return to work immediately. The only discomforts of post-mesotherapy are minor itching and burning. Few patients will experience mild allergic reactions.
Mesotherapy is a technique invented in 1952 by Dr. Michel Pistor to deliver medications just below the skin surface. Mesotherapy is injected only where it is needed and targets fat and connective tissues under the skin. In 1987, the French Academy of Medicine recognized Mesotherapy as an inherent part of traditional medicine.
A few years ago, Mesotherapy was introduced to American. Shortly after, it became one of the most popular options for people who want to lose weight and reduce local fat and cellulite.
Mesotherapy greatly improves cellulite and stubborn fat pads like the "love handles", "baby belly" and "saddlebags". Over the past 50 years, more than 15,000 physicians worldwide have used Mesotherapy for many uses including spot weight reduction, cellulite reduction, eyelid fat pad reduction, "double chin" and wrinkle elimination.
More and more people choose mesotherapy over liposuction as a safer and more effective way for weight reduction and local fat removal.
The Usage of Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy is greatly used for cellulite, weight loss and body contouring.
Mesotherapy for Cellulite
Mesotherapy is the most effective and long lasting treatment for cellulite available. Liposuction makes cellulite worse. Endermologie works, but doesn’t last long.
Mesotherapy can improve cellulite caused by poor circulation, defective connective tissue, enlarged fat cells, poor diet and nutrition habits.
Based on the grade of cellulite, a mesotherapy formula will be selected to painlessly injected into the area of cellulite. Correcting cellulite usually requires 10 to 15 sessions per area.
Mesotherapy for Weight Loss and Body Contouring
Mesotherapy can be used to reduce and contour specific undesired fat. After a comprehensive history and physical exam, a personalized body contour program will be designed. A specific formula will be painlessly injected beneath the skin directly into the fatty layer and breakdown the unwanted fat. The fat will be metabolized through urine, blood and GI tract out of the body.
Doctors will also design a diet and exercise program to maximize the results.
Candidates for Mesotherapy
Adults between the ages of 18 - 75 and in good health are candidates for Mesotherapy.
Who cannot have mesotherapy?
People with the following conditions can not have mesotherapy:
· History of severe heart disease, heart arrhythmias, blood clots, stroke, and recent cancer
· Insulin dependent diabetes
· On blood thinning medications
· On multiple heart medications
· Pregnant or breast feeding
Liposuction VS. Mesotherapy
Liposuction uses metal probes to suck out all the fat cells from the area with undesired fat. Once the fat is sucked out, it will never return to the body. But if patients intake too much calories, they will reaccumulate fat in other area where they never had fat before, such as the back, thighs and arms.
Mesotherapy in not to destroy the fat cells, but to affect the cell membranes and induce the fat to empty out of the cell and get metabolized out of the system through urine, blood and GI tract. The process is similar to the way when people exercise and diet to loose weight by metabolizing fat out of the system.
Liposuction is a surgical procedure which will leave scars from cannula insertion. The trauma will create fibrosis and scarring under the skin. It may even worsen cellulite. The average recovering time is 2 weeks when people might have to lose wages in this downtime, thus increasing the total cost. It may also cause significant bruising and pain.
Mesotherapy is a non-invasive procedure. It’s non-scarring due to the very small needle injection. It will not create fibrosis and scars under the skin. There is no downtime and recovery. Many people take advantage of their lunch break for mesotherapy. There is minimal bruising and pain. Mesotherapy helps smooth cellulite.
Side Effects of Mesotherapy
Mesotherapy has very few side effects. After mesotherapy treatment, patients may resume their normal activities immediately. Unlike liposuction, Mesotherapy does not require restrictive garments.
Mesotherapy usually causes slight bruising which resolves over one week. Swelling from Mesotherapy is mild and lasts only a day or two. Some patients notice a little itchiness for 2-3 hours after their Mesotherapy.
If needed, an appropriate topical cream may be recommended by your doctor to speed the resolution of bruising and reduce itchiness.
Loose fitting clothing and avoidance of vigorous exercise for 1 day after mesotherapy is advised to avoid side effects.
Cost of Mesotherapy
The cost of Mesotherapy depends upon the size and number of areas treated and the number of sessions required. Compared to liposuction, mesotherapy is very affordable.
Liposuction can cost between $5,000 to $10,000 per session. In addition, liposuction has the additional expense of lost wages as your recovery may prevent you from going to work for up to 2 weeks.
Each Mesotherapy session costs anywhere from $300-$500. For cellulite, mesotherapy sessions are most effective if done weekly. For local fat deduction, it can be done every other week. Usually, in ten weeks, targeted areas can be reduced up to six inches by melting fat under the skin.
